0dfef50313 bpf: Skip task with pid=1 in send_signal_common()
[ Upstream commit a3d81bc1eaef48e34dd0b9b48eefed9e02a06451 ]

The following kernel panic can be triggered when a task with pid=1 attaches
a prog that attempts to send killing signal to itself, also see [1] for more
details:

  Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! exitcode=0x0000000b

So skip task with pid=1 in bpf_send_signal_common() to avoid the panic.

592ba7116f trace_events_hist: add check for return value of 'create_hist_field'
commit 8b152e9150d07a885f95e1fd401fc81af202d9a4 upstream.

Function 'create_hist_field' is called recursively at
trace_events_hist.c:1954 and can return NULL-value that's why we have
to check it to avoid null pointer dereference.

Found by Linux Verification Center (linuxtesting.org) with SVACE.

b0af180514 tracing: Make sure trace_printk() can output as soon as it can be used
commit 3bb06eb6e9acf7c4a3e1b5bc87aed398ff8e2253 upstream.

Currently trace_printk() can be used as soon as early_trace_init() is
called from start_kernel(). But if a crash happens, and
"ftrace_dump_on_oops" is set on the kernel command line, all you get will
be:

  [    0.456075]   <idle>-0         0dN.2. 347519us : Unknown type 6
  [    0.456075]   <idle>-0         0dN.2. 353141us : Unknown type 6
  [    0.456075]   <idle>-0         0dN.2. 358684us : Unknown type 6

This is because the trace_printk() event (type 6) hasn't been registered
yet. That gets done via an early_initcall(), which may be early, but not
early enough.

Instead of registering the trace_printk() event (and other ftrace events,
which are not trace events) via an early_initcall(), have them registered at
the same time that trace_printk() can be used. This way, if there is a
crash before early_initcall(), then the trace_printk()s will actually be
useful.

91135d7233 module: Don't wait for GOING modules
commit 0254127ab977e70798707a7a2b757c9f3c971210 upstream.

During a system boot, it can happen that the kernel receives a burst of
requests to insert the same module but loading it eventually fails
during its init call. For instance, udev can make a request to insert
a frequency module for each individual CPU when another frequency module
is already loaded which causes the init function of the new module to
return an error.

Since commit 6e6de3dee5 ("kernel/module.c: Only return -EEXIST for
modules that have finished loading"), the kernel waits for modules in
MODULE_STATE_GOING state to finish unloading before making another
attempt to load the same module.

This creates unnecessary work in the described scenario and delays the
boot. In the worst case, it can prevent udev from loading drivers for
other devices and might cause timeouts of services waiting on them and
subsequently a failed boot.

This patch attempts a different solution for the problem 6e6de3dee5
was trying to solve. Rather than waiting for the unloading to complete,
it returns a different error code (-EBUSY) for modules in the GOING
state. This should avoid the error situation that was described in
6e6de3dee5 (user space attempting to load a dependent module because
the -EEXIST error code would suggest to user space that the first module
had been loaded successfully), while avoiding the delay situation too.

This has been tested on linux-next since December 2022 and passes
all kmod selftests except test 0009 with module compression enabled
but it has been confirmed that this issue has existed and has gone
unnoticed since prior to this commit and can also be reproduced without
module compression with a simple usleep(5000000) on tools/modprobe.c [0].
These failures are caused by hitting the kernel mod_concurrent_max and can
happen either due to a self inflicted kernel module auto-loead DoS somehow
or on a system with large CPU count and each CPU count incorrectly triggering
many module auto-loads. Both of those issues need to be fixed in-kernel.

Use a temporary variable to take full advantage of READ_ONCE() behavior.

the initial test.

f80fb0001f exit: Put an upper limit on how often we can oops
commit d4ccd54d28d3c8598e2354acc13e28c060961dbb upstream.

Many Linux systems are configured to not panic on oops; but allowing an
attacker to oops the system **really** often can make even bugs that look
completely unexploitable exploitable (like NULL dereferences and such) if
each crash elevates a refcount by one or a lock is taken in read mode, and
this causes a counter to eventually overflow.

The most interesting counters for this are 32 bits wide (like open-coded
refcounts that don't use refcount_t). (The ldsem reader count on 32-bit
platforms is just 16 bits, but probably nobody cares about 32-bit platforms
that much nowadays.)

So let's panic the system if the kernel is constantly oopsing.

The speed of oopsing 2^32 times probably depends on several factors, like
how long the stack trace is and which unwinder you're using; an empirically
important one is whether your console is showing a graphical environment or
a text console that oopses will be printed to.
In a quick single-threaded benchmark, it looks like oopsing in a vfork()
child with a very short stack trace only takes ~510 microseconds per run
when a graphical console is active; but switching to a text console that
oopses are printed to slows it down around 87x, to ~45 milliseconds per
run.
(Adding more threads makes this faster, but the actual oops printing
happens under &die_lock on x86, so you can maybe speed this up by a factor
of around 2 and then any further improvement gets eaten up by lock
contention.)

It looks like it would take around 8-12 days to overflow a 32-bit counter
with repeated oopsing on a multi-core X86 system running a graphical
environment; both me (in an X86 VM) and Seth (with a distro kernel on
normal hardware in a standard configuration) got numbers in that ballpark.

12 days aren't *that* short on a desktop system, and you'd likely need much
longer on a typical server system (assuming that people don't run graphical
desktop environments on their servers), and this is a *very* noisy and
violent approach to exploiting the kernel; and it also seems to take orders
of magnitude longer on some machines, probably because stuff like EFI
pstore will slow it down a ton if that's active.

There are two big uses of do_exit. The first is it's design use to be
the guts of the exit(2) system call. The second use is to terminate

Add a function make_task_dead that is initialy exactly the same as
do_exit to cover the cases where do_exit is called to handle
catastrophic failure. In time this can probably be reduced to just a
light wrapper around do_task_dead. For now keep it exactly the same so
that there will be no behavioral differences introducing this new
concept.

Replace all of the uses of do_exit that use it for catastraphic

In order to avoid copy-pasting "panic_on_warn = 0" all over the places,
it is better to move it inside panic() and then remove it from the other
places.

kernel/sysctl.c is a kitchen sink where everyone leaves their dirty

To help with this maintenance let's start by moving sysctls to places

know what sysctl knobs you wish to add for your own piece of code, we
just care about the core logic.

All filesystem syctls now get reviewed by fs folks. This commit
follows the commit of fs, move the oops_all_cpu_backtrace sysctl to

01bdcc73db bpf: Fix pointer-leak due to insufficient speculative store bypass mitigation
[ Upstream commit e4f4db47794c9f474b184ee1418f42e6a07412b6 ]

To mitigate Spectre v4, 2039f26f3a ("bpf: Fix leakage due to
insufficient speculative store bypass mitigation") inserts lfence
instructions after 1) initializing a stack slot and 2) spilling a
pointer to the stack.

However, this does not cover cases where a stack slot is first
initialized with a pointer (subject to sanitization) but then
overwritten with a scalar (not subject to sanitization because
the slot was already initialized). In this case, the second write
may be subject to speculative store bypass (SSB) creating a
speculative pointer-as-scalar type confusion. This allows the
program to subsequently leak the numerical pointer value using,
for example, a branch-based cache side channel.

To fix this, also sanitize scalars if they write a stack slot
that previously contained a pointer. Assuming that pointer-spills
are only generated by LLVM on register-pressure, the performance
impact on most real-world BPF programs should be small.

The following unprivileged BPF bytecode drafts a minimal exploit
and the mitigation:

  [...]
  // r6 = 0 or 1 (skalar, unknown user input)
  // r7 = accessible ptr for side channel
  // r10 = frame pointer (fp), to be leaked
  //
  r9 = r10 # fp alias to encourage ssb
  *(u64 *)(r9 - 8) = r10 // fp[-8] = ptr, to be leaked
  // lfence added here because of pointer spill to stack.
  //
  // Ommitted: Dummy bpf_ringbuf_output() here to train alias predictor
  // for no r9-r10 dependency.
  //
  *(u64 *)(r10 - 8) = r6 // fp[-8] = scalar, overwrites ptr
  // 2039f26f3a: no lfence added because stack slot was not STACK_INVALID,
  // store may be subject to SSB
  //
  // fix: also add an lfence when the slot contained a ptr
  //
  r8 = *(u64 *)(r9 - 8)
  // r8 = architecturally a scalar, speculatively a ptr
  //
  // leak ptr using branch-based cache side channel:
  r8 &= 1 // choose bit to leak
  if r8 == 0 goto SLOW // no mispredict
  // architecturally dead code if input r6 is 0,
  // only executes speculatively iff ptr bit is 1
  r8 = *(u64 *)(r7 + 0) # encode bit in cache (0: slow, 1: fast)
SLOW:
  [...]

After running this, the program can time the access to *(r7 + 0) to
determine whether the chosen pointer bit was 0 or 1. Repeat this 64
times to recover the whole address on amd64.

In summary, sanitization can only be skipped if one scalar is
overwritten with another scalar. Scalar-confusion due to speculative
store bypass can not lead to invalid accesses because the pointer
bounds deducted during verification are enforced using branchless
logic. See 979d63d50c ("bpf: prevent out of bounds speculation on
pointer arithmetic") for details.

Do not make the mitigation depend on !env->allow_{uninit_stack,ptr_leaks}
because speculative leaks are likely unexpected if these were enabled.
For example, leaking the address to a protected log file may be acceptable
while disabling the mitigation might unintentionally leak the address
into the cached-state of a map that is accessible to unprivileged
processes.

13188635cc ANDROID: ring-buffer: Introducing external writer support
The ring buffer is convenient: it has a page granularity and its format
is already supported by userspace tools such as trace-cmd. It is a
natural solution to store events that would come from outside the kernel
such as a hypervisor.

In that case, where a writer is external to the kernel, the latter would
only be responsible for the allocation and to read back the ring buffer.

The allocation is done with the newly introduced function which just
needs a size and a set of callbacks (notice only the overwrite mode is
supported at the moment):

  ring_buffer_alloc_ext(unsigned long size,
                        struct ring_buffer_ext_cb *cb)

The callbacks given to this allocator enables communication with the
external writer:

  (*swap_reader)(int cpu): Ask the writer to swap the current reader
                              page with the head.

  (*update_footers)(int cpu): Ask the writer to update material in the
                              page footers.

Each page from the ring buffer has indeed a footer in which statistics
and page status can be retrieved. This allows the kernel to update its
view on the ring buffer, following a reader page swap or a footers
update.

After the trace_buffer is allocated, a helper serializes the relevant
information into a structure that can be easily sent to the external
writer:

  trace_buffer_pack(struct trace_buffer *trace_buffer,
                    struct trace_buffer_pack *pack)

The footer and pack description can be found in the newly introduced
header file include/linux/ring_buffer_ext.h.

When the kernel is writing to the ring buffer, it can wake up quite
easily the reader. That's not the case when the writer is external. A
new function allows polling for reading the ring buffer:

  ring_buffer_poke(struct trace_buffer *buffer, int cpu)

A ring-buffer allocated for an external writer will forbid any writing
(the whole design of the ring buffer mandates a single writer) and will
also prevent extending or extracting pages.

When I presented this work to the tracingsummit, rosted@ told me he saw
some overlapping with an idea he had to enable him to map the tracing
buffers in userspace. We designed together a solution that would enable
both features. Problem now, if on one hand, the development of the new
design has started already... it would nonetheless impose a significant
revamp of this patchset, which wouldn't make it to Android14. Nothing
technically wrong with anything here, but sending it to LKML wouldn't
make sense, as I know already this isn't as "reusable" as the version
agreed upon.

In preparation for allowing the write of ring-buffer compliant pages
outside of ring_buffer.c move to the header, struct buffer_data_page and
timestamp encoding functions.

6508788b2c bpf: restore the ebpf program ID for BPF_AUDIT_UNLOAD and PERF_BPF_EVENT_PROG_UNLOAD
commit ef01f4e25c1760920e2c94f1c232350277ace69b upstream.

When changing the ebpf program put() routines to support being called
from within IRQ context the program ID was reset to zero prior to
calling the perf event and audit UNLOAD record generators, which
resulted in problems as the ebpf program ID was bogus (always zero).
This patch addresses this problem by removing an unnecessary call to
bpf_prog_free_id() in __bpf_prog_offload_destroy() and adjusting
__bpf_prog_put() to only call bpf_prog_free_id() after audit and perf
have finished their bpf program unload tasks in
bpf_prog_put_deferred(). For the record, no one can determine, or
remember, why it was necessary to free the program ID, and remove it
from the IDR, prior to executing bpf_prog_put_deferred();
regardless, both Stanislav and Alexei agree that the approach in this
patch should be safe.

It is worth noting that when moving the bpf_prog_free_id() call, the
do_idr_lock parameter was forced to true as the ebpf devs determined
this was the correct as the do_idr_lock should always be true. The
do_idr_lock parameter will be removed in a follow-up patch, but it
was kept here to keep the patch small in an effort to ease any stable
backports.

I also modified the bpf_audit_prog() logic used to associate the
AUDIT_BPF record with other associated records, e.g. @ctx != NULL.
Instead of keying off the operation, it now keys off the execution
context, e.g. '!in_irg && !irqs_disabled()', which is much more
appropriate and should help better connect the UNLOAD operations with
the associated audit state (other audit records).

f01aefe374 prlimit: do_prlimit needs to have a speculation check
commit 739790605705ddcf18f21782b9c99ad7d53a8c11 upstream.

do_prlimit() adds the user-controlled resource value to a pointer that
will subsequently be dereferenced. In order to help prevent this
codepath from being used as a spectre "gadget" a barrier needs to be
added after checking the range.

0a903fe828 ANDROID: GKI: Header generation fix and improvements
Remove dependency on kleaf intermediate abi_symbollist.raw
and use vendor symbol lists as dependencies for header
generation targets. This prevents the feature to break in
case kleaf path and/or sandboxes changes and rebuilds the
header files if any vendor symbol list changes.

Update the header generation script to process the symbol lists
before generating headers to make sure symbols are in byte order,
any symbol list marker, whitespaces and emptylines are removed
for kernel binary search API.

b22faa21b6 sched/core: Fix use-after-free bug in dup_user_cpus_ptr()
commit 87ca4f9efbd7cc649ff43b87970888f2812945b8 upstream.

Since commit 07ec77a1d4 ("sched: Allow task CPU affinity to be
restricted on asymmetric systems"), the setting and clearing of
user_cpus_ptr are done under pi_lock for arm64 architecture. However,
dup_user_cpus_ptr() accesses user_cpus_ptr without any lock
protection. Since sched_setaffinity() can be invoked from another
process, the process being modified may be undergoing fork() at
the same time. When racing with the clearing of user_cpus_ptr in
__set_cpus_allowed_ptr_locked(), it can lead to user-after-free and
possibly double-free in arm64 kernel.

Commit 8f9ea86fdf99 ("sched: Always preserve the user requested
cpumask") fixes this problem as user_cpus_ptr, once set, will never
be cleared in a task's lifetime. However, this bug was re-introduced
in commit 851a723e45d1 ("sched: Always clear user_cpus_ptr in
do_set_cpus_allowed()") which allows the clearing of user_cpus_ptr in
do_set_cpus_allowed(). This time, it will affect all arches.

Fix this bug by always clearing the user_cpus_ptr of the newly
cloned/forked task before the copying process starts and check the
user_cpus_ptr state of the source task under pi_lock.

Note to stable, this patch won't be applicable to stable releases.
Just copy the new dup_user_cpus_ptr() function over.

31f50e8abc FROMGIT: bpf: btf: limit logging of ignored BTF mismatches
Enabling CONFIG_MODULE_ALLOW_BTF_MISMATCH is an indication that BTF
mismatches are expected and module loading should proceed
anyway. Logging with pr_warn() on every one of these "benign"
mismatches creates unnecessary noise when many such modules are
loaded. Instead, handle this case with a single log warning that BTF
info may be unavailable.

Mismatches also result in calls to __btf_verifier_log() via
__btf_verifier_log_type() or btf_verifier_log_member(), adding several
additional lines of logging per mismatched module. Add checks to these
paths to skip logging for module BTF mismatches in the "allow
mismatch" case.

All existing logging behavior is preserved in the default
CONFIG_MODULE_ALLOW_BTF_MISMATCH=n case.

394514ddf9 tracing: Fix issue of missing one synthetic field
commit ff4837f7fe59ff018eca4705a70eca5e0b486b97 upstream.

17becbc4dd tracing/probes: Handle system names with hyphens
commit 575b76cb885532aae13a9d979fd476bb2b156cb9 upstream.

When creating probe names, a check is done to make sure it matches basic C
standard variable naming standards. Basically, starts with alphabetic or
underline, and then the rest of the characters have alpha-numeric or
underline in them.

But system names do not have any true naming conventions, as they are
created by the TRACE_SYSTEM macro and nothing tests to see what they are.
The "xhci-hcd" trace events has a '-' in the system name. When trying to
attach a eprobe to one of these trace points, it fails because the system
name does not follow the variable naming convention because of the
hyphen, and the eprobe checks fail on this.

Allow hyphens in the system name so that eprobes can attach to the
"xhci-hcd" trace events.

2a81ff5ce8 tracing: Fix complicated dependency of CONFIG_TRACER_MAX_TRACE
commit e25e43a4e5d8cb2323553d8b6a7ba08d2ebab21f upstream.

Both CONFIG_OSNOISE_TRACER and CONFIG_HWLAT_TRACER partially enables the
CONFIG_TRACER_MAX_TRACE code, but that is complicated and has
introduced a bug; It declares tracing_max_lat_fops data structure outside
of #ifdefs, but since it is defined only when CONFIG_TRACER_MAX_TRACE=y
or CONFIG_HWLAT_TRACER=y, if only CONFIG_OSNOISE_TRACER=y, that
declaration comes to a definition(!).

To fix this issue, and do not repeat the similar problem, makes
CONFIG_OSNOISE_TRACER and CONFIG_HWLAT_TRACER enables the
CONFIG_TRACER_MAX_TRACE always. It has there benefits;
- Fix the tracing_max_lat_fops bug
- Simplify the #ifdefs
- CONFIG_TRACER_MAX_TRACE code is fully enabled, or not.

fe8c35c6ff tracing: Fix race where eprobes can be called before the event
commit d5f30a7da8ea8e6450250275cec5670cee3c4264 upstream.

The flag that tells the event to call its triggers after reading the event
is set for eprobes after the eprobe is enabled. This leads to a race where
the eprobe may be triggered at the beginning of the event where the record
information is NULL. The eprobe then dereferences the NULL record causing
a NULL kernel pointer bug.

Test for a NULL record to keep this from happening.

commit 0a041ebca4956292cadfb14a63ace3a9c1dcb0a3 upstream.

It passes the attr struct to the security_perf_event_open() but it's
not initialized yet.

15697f6533 tracing/hist: Fix out-of-bound write on 'action_data.var_ref_idx'
commit 82470f7d9044842618c847a7166de2b7458157a7 upstream.

When generate a synthetic event with many params and then create a trace
action for it [1], kernel panic happened [2].

It is because that in trace_action_create() 'data->n_params' is up to
SYNTH_FIELDS_MAX (current value is 64), and array 'data->var_ref_idx'
keeps indices into array 'hist_data->var_refs' for each synthetic event
param, but the length of 'data->var_ref_idx' is TRACING_MAP_VARS_MAX
(current value is 16), so out-of-bound write happened when 'data->n_params'
more than 16. In this case, 'data->match_data.event' is overwritten and
eventually cause the panic.

To solve the issue, adjust the length of 'data->var_ref_idx' to be
SYNTH_FIELDS_MAX and add sanity checks to avoid out-of-bound write.

cd0f597c8a rcu-tasks: Simplify trc_read_check_handler() atomic operations
commit 96017bf9039763a2e02dcc6adaa18592cd73a39d upstream.

Currently, trc_wait_for_one_reader() atomically increments
the trc_n_readers_need_end counter before sending the IPI
invoking trc_read_check_handler(). All failure paths out of
trc_read_check_handler() and also from the smp_call_function_single()
within trc_wait_for_one_reader() must carefully atomically decrement
this counter. This is more complex than it needs to be.

This commit therefore simplifies things and saves a few lines of
code by dispensing with the atomic decrements in favor of having
trc_read_check_handler() do the atomic increment only in the success case.
In theory, this represents no change in functionality.
